Match Report

Sunday 11th September was the first competition of the new season - the 'Get Me Started Comp' - at the Black Lion Leisure Centre, Gillingham (I'm not sure what the dancing season is, but there you have it). With just a week to go before the adult Medallist of the Year qualifiers in Reading it was a chance for everyone to get back in the swing of competitive dancing and, for quite a few Wright Rhythemers (sic), a chance to find out what this whole dance competition thing is all about!

The day started far too early with the first round of the children's competitions at 9.45am (probably they are actually called juveniles or juniors but I can never remember which). It was just as well the children were in fine form because the bleary eyed adults were only just able to drag themselves on to the floor. The competition was tough, as you would expect with the number of experienced dancers there, but some outstanding performances ensured everyone went home with silverware - a fantastic achievement!

The morning passed at a fairly relaxed pace due to the relatively small number of competitors but at 2:30pm, when the adult competitions began, the pace picked up dramatically. There were some nervous faces amongst the Wright Rhythm crowd, for some because this was their first competition and they weren't sure what to expect, for others it was the thrill of making up routines round by round. They needn't have worried, however, as everyone performed superbly. The 'old hands' did what we've now come to expect and scooped up plenty more trophies for the mantelpiece and the 'young at heart' showed everyone they've got what it takes by picking up all the top prizes in their categories. Special congratulations must go to Gillian, Howard and Rafiq who, despite it being their first time on 'the battleground', showed nerves of steel to make the finals of the first-timers comps.

Looking around at the end of the day there were lots of exhausted but happy faces and this is reflected in some outstanding results. We tried to note as many of the results as we could below, if we got any wrong or have missed any out please let me know.
