BCDC Invitation Day 2005

Sunday 25th September 2005 : The Rivoli Ballroom

Update... Thanks to Frazer for providing a report on the demonstration, keep those reports rolling in.

Match Report

Well, no team can keep going forever with fantastic results (even Chelsea let in a goal at the weekend, something at least one Wright Rhythm teacher hopes will happen again on Wednesday - Liverpool vs Chelsea in the Champions League). So, after two incredible weeks, some of the results this weekend (with notable exceptions) slightly dampened the school's mood. As always the Rivoli comp was a relaxed and enjoyable but efficiently run affair and gives Mark the chance to prove he can do more than just make dancers out of us but also knows what it takes to organise a great comp. Of course, he did have a little help from his friends and Paula's compering kept the show going superbly when Mark stepped out.

It's always the case that the standard of completion at the Rivoli is extremely high with many open competitors gracing the floor and this year was no exception. However it's healthy competition that makes us better dancers so those that did well can be rightly proud of themselves and those that didn't know that they will dance better next week for the experience.

The ballroom in the morning saw crowded floors and strong floor-craft was of paramount importance. Fortunately there were no actual deaths but there were some close calls and I don't think my inability to anticipate the edge of the floor did me any favours - sorry to everyone sitting on the front row!

By the time it got to the afternoon and the Latin competitions the three competitions in as many weeks were taking thier toll - so the less said about my dancing the better. That clearly wasn't the case for everyone though and, in particular, congratulations to Carys and Nichole who came 2nd in the 9-11 and 3rd in the U12 4 dance beating arch rivals in a superb display. It sounds to me like they were just doing their usual superb dancing and it took an expert adjudicator to recognise it - enter Brendan Cole!

Unfortunately Bec and I had to leave early and so missed the demonstration but I've not had any contributions to the website yet so perhaps this is a perfect opportunity for someone who was there to write a quick review! You just need to write it in the feedback form, hit submit, and I'll do the rest. As you can tell from the match reports I do not have a particular high standard for editorial so just splurge your thoughts.

Finally, it's the children's qualifiers at Haywards Heath next weekend so best of luck to everyone competing, if the adult competition was anything to go by, you're all going to be great.

The Demonstration

Many thanks to special guest reporter Frazer Magee for this account of the Rivoli demonstrations.

Hi everybody. As Pete didn't get to see the demonstrations at the Rivoli comp I thought that I should perhaps fill you in on all the details.

First of all there were Darren and Lilia and Lilia looked beautifull as always and she gave a superb display of the cha cha and the paso. My personal favourite was the Paso both Darren and Lilia really portrayed the meaning of the Paso with their outfits and the passion in their dancing, I thought it made a brilliant performance. I thought that the other performance was a little lacklustre, so lacklustre in fact that I can't remember who was performing (not good really but I really can't remember) anyway all I can remember is that I thought that she looked a bit like a fish with her facial expressions hahaha c ya l8a bye.

A further update from Frazer...

Hi everybody. I felt a little embarrassed at forgetting who did the ballroom demonstration at Rivoli and so I have been racking my brains and I eventually remembered who it was, then I went onto the internet and researched them to find out how good they are and it seems that they are actually pretty good - world champion type really good - so I am going to eat my words and say that they were perhaps having an off day and I am going to make a public apology to Joanne Bolton for saying that she looked like a fish because she is normally very beautiful.

Photos

Hmm... not so many photos this week, it seems that the Rivoli ballroom was too challenging a location for my distinctly amateur photography skills. I know Steve was on the case with his camera so hopefully he did a better job than me and if anyone else has photo's they would like to share, let me know.
